Al Faqa is a desert area that sits on the border of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, right alongside the Dubai–Al Ain Road (E66). It is one of the UAE’s lesser-known desert destinations less commercialised than Lahbab, quieter than most mainstream safari zones, and genuinely untouched in character.
The area is known for its undulating golden dunes, wide open space, and the kind of peaceful desert atmosphere that is hard to find closer to the city. If you want a desert that feels like a real desert not a tourist park Al Faqa delivers that.
Most visitors reach it via Exit 63 or Exit 65 off the Dubai–Al Ain Road, next to the Al Faqa fire station. The camp sits roughly 2 km from the main road, set in a natural bowl surrounded by dunes.

You do not need a 4×4 to reach the Al Faqa meeting point. Once you arrive, the operator’s professional team takes over in a 4×4 Land Cruiser for the dune bashing and desert camp portion of the safari.
Al Faqa is one of the few desert safari locations in the UAE that supports a self-drive option. You drive your own car to the meeting point, leave it parked, and join the group for all activities. No 4×4 required for arrival.

Booking a private 4×4 at AED 999 for a group of 6 brings the per-person cost to AED 167 close to VIP pricing but with full privacy, your own schedule, and no strangers in your vehicle.

November to March is the best period for an Al Faqa desert safari. The weather is comfortable for dune bashing, sandboarding, and sitting at the open-air camp. Summer visits are possible but require early morning or late evening timing.
Al Faqa is family-friendly. The desert terrain is wide and open, the camp is enclosed, and activities like camel rides, sandboarding, and henna are all suitable for children. Children under 3 travel free. Dune bashing is not recommended for children under 5 or those prone to motion sickness.
Tip: If you have very young children, book a private car so you can control the pace and skip dune bashing if needed.
The private desert safari is popular with couples. You get your own vehicle, your own section at camp, and the freedom to stop for photos anywhere in the desert. The overnight safari is the most romantic option sleeping under the stars and watching the sunrise over the dunes.
The standard shared evening safari at AED 99 is the best value for solo travellers. You share the jeep and campsite with other guests a good way to meet other travellers in a relaxed setting.
The morning safari is the most comfortable option for seniors shorter duration, cooler temperatures, and no intense evening show schedule. Inform your driver if you prefer a gentler dune drive. Reputable operators always accommodate different comfort levels.
Al Faqa is less crowded than Lahbab and offers a more natural, less staged photography environment. The sunrise and sunset light over the undulating dunes is exceptional. Overnight package holders get both the golden-hour sunset and the soft dawn light.

No. The meeting point is accessible in any car. Your operator’s 4×4 team handles all the off-road driving inside the desert. If you are self-driving for the safari itself, a 4×4 is required for the dunes.
Al Faqa sits on the administrative border. The area is addressed to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi but is operationally treated as part of the Dubai–Al Ain tourism corridor.
